The Androgyny Palette ($45) by Jeffree Star Cosmetics has finally been revealed. Originally, it was supposed to be released last Autumn but due to some issues the release was pushed back. It has been confirmed that it will be officially launched on March 4th. As usual. with the marketing industry being what it is right now we can all be prepared for a slew of big name bloggers and YouTubers to have their hands on this first. I love seeing all the diverse looks people create and hearing their honest opinions, it helps me make the decision whether to buy it or not. For an unbiased opinion on the palette please keep reading, I have included swatches and close-ups as well as the original video where all of these images are derived from. I would love to hear your opinion in the comments too.
Let’s start with the packaging. Jeffree describes the case as being “leatherette”, a term I have never heard before but essentially means faux leather. It has a reptilian like texture but he stresses that the palette is completely vegan and cruelty-free which is always nice to hear. The palette also boasts a nice large mirror and I assume, because he didn’t specify, that the pan sizes are identical to the Beauty Killer Palette (now £28 on Beauty Bay) which are 2.52g per shadow, for comparison purposes a MAC eyeshadow is 1.5g so you are getting more product than you would in most palettes. You can see the size difference below, I like the large pans as it means you can dip your brush in easily.
I will be honest and say that although I appreciate Jeffree’s aesthetic and admire his unconventional approach to makeup I don’t think I will be buying this. Mostly because I have been burned too many times with internet fraud and think it is safer for me to just not purchase things online anymore. I am sure my makeup collection will suffer enormously, on top of this there was some controversy surrounding Jeffree last year about his actions and remarks he made in the past. I know a lot of people were offended by this and his lack of apology. I can’t deny that I am subscribed to his YouTube channel and love the incredible looks he creates, I am appreciative of his makeup talent and don’t have a firm opinion of him as a person. I don’t judge people before I know them and don’t know the full story in this case, what I have heard isn’t pretty though. Regardless of my personal decision, this post is purely based on the quality of this palette and my honest opinion of it.
Jeffree describes the Androgyny Eyeshadow Palette ($45/£40) as being his version of a neutral palette. He wanted to create something that was wearable but still fun and reflective of his personality containing colours that you don’t see in other neutral palettes. In total, there are 10 eyeshadows in square pans. The layout is identical to Beauty Killer and there are 2 formulas included: super mattes and metallics. Jeffree maintains that he wanted to improve the quality of this palette and make the shadows even more pigmented, creamy and just all round brilliant. Based on the reviews I have seen, Beauty Killer has gotten good reviews for the most part, so this gives me high hopes for this palette and the colour scheme is beautiful and interesting but not very neutral. It is definitely more suitable for those drawn to pops of colour.
The top row is quite neutral, here are the five shades: Frosting (gold toned pale metallic); Safe Word (cool toned super matte light brown – great transitional crease colour and contour shade for fair skin); Charm (warm-toned orange matte); Deja Vu (a frosted metallic burgundy brown) and Dominatrix (purple-brown chocolate matte).
The bottom row contains a few pops of colour and these five shades are: Androgyny (matte perfect plum); Fetish (deep dark metallic red); Military (matte camo/military green); Poison (matte teal green) and Swallow (a vibrant dark blue matte). In total, there are 3 metallic shades and 7 mattes.
Overall, although I am loving the first row and the reds, I think the green and blues are a little out of place. I also think the two blue shades look very similar and would have loved a really deep gorgeous navy colour and a larger variety of finishes. Although, mattes are by far my favourite formula I would have loved more metallics. My favourite shades are Frosting, Androgyny and Dominatrix. I also quite like Military as I don’t think I have a matte green like this in my collection. What are your thoughts on this palette? Do you like the colours? Will you buy it? Thank you for reading. As always, don’t forget to follow me on Bloglovin’, it would really make my weekend. Thank you again. I have many more reviews coming your way so stay tuned. Take care.
What do you think of the new Androgyny Palette, would you buy it?
